In July, our Residential Scholars embarked on a powerful cultural immersion experience in Guatemala, visiting another affiliate, Esperanza Juvenil. Over the course of a week, Scholars forged cross-cultural friendships, deepened their global understanding, and returned home transformed by the power of shared experience.
The journey began with a warm welcome from Esperanza Juvenil’s Executive Director, Lucas Pinzon, who shared the affiliate’s mission and the realities of educational access in Guatemala, particularly for girls. Scholars toured both the elementary and high school campuses and visited a local home to better understand daily life for students in the program.
Throughout the week, Northeastern Ohio Scholars were paired with their Guatemalan peers, joining them in classrooms, games, and English lessons, becoming both learners and teachers. They played tag, led math lessons, braided hair, shared meals, and even caught the USA vs. Guatemala soccer game together – complete with their own halftime match!
Their service project took them to Tecpán, where Scholars painted school buildings, cleared overgrown walkways, and installed drainage pipes to help harvest rainwater, leaving the school brighter, safer, and more welcoming for its students.
At Lake Atitlán, Scholars explored the natural beauty and artisan traditions of Guatemala, learning from local beekeepers, weavers, and chocolate makers. A final excursion to Antigua gave Scholars the chance to soak in the historic charm of the city, with shopping, sightseeing, and reflections along the way.
Despite unexpected earthquakes near the end of the trip, everyone remained safe and continued building bonds with their residential hosts through games, meals, and heartfelt goodbyes. Many shared that they’re already dreaming of a return.
This trip marked more than just a visit – it was a journey of connection, empathy, and personal growth. Scholars stepped out of their comfort zones, embraced new cultures, and returned with a renewed sense of purpose and perspective.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this life-changing experience possible. The effects of this journey will continue to grow within our Scholars and ripple throughout our community. It was an experience that truly changed their lives forever.
